How bold Discord fonts work
Bold Discord fonts come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block of Unicode. Mathematicians use separate bold letters to mean different things in formulas, so Unicode gives every bold letter its own code point: π is U+1D400, not a regular βAβ with formatting applied. Bold serif, bold sans-serif (π), bold italic (π¨) and sans bold italic (πΌ) are all separate alphabets in that block, and each includes digits.
Because the bold is part of the character itself, it survives copy and paste into fields that strip formatting, like your display name, server nickname and custom status.
How to bold text in Discord messages
In chat and in your About Me you donβt need special letters: wrap text in two asterisks, **like this**, and Discord makes it bold. Use three asterisks for ***bold italic*** and combine with underscores for __**bold underline**__. On desktop you can also select text in the message box and pick bold from the formatting toolbar. See the Discord text formatting guide for every option.
When to use Discord markdown instead
In chat messages and your About Me, Discord already supports **bold** markdown. Markdown bold is easier to read, can be searched, and works with screen readers, so it is the better choice for long text. Use Unicode bold where markdown isnβt available: names, nicknames, statuses, server names and channel names.
Screen readers often read Unicode bold letter by letter or skip it entirely, so keep it to short names and headings rather than whole sentences.

Bold Discord Fonts: common questions
Can I use bold fonts in my Discord display name?
Yes. Display names and server nicknames accept Unicode bold letters, up to 32 characters. Your @username handle cannot use them, because it only allows lowercase aβz, 0β9, periods and underscores.
Why does my bold text look like boxes?
Very old devices lack fonts for the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. Bold serif and bold sans have the widest support of any style on this site, so they are the safest choice if your friends use older phones.
How do I bold text on Discord mobile?
Type two asterisks on each side of the text, **like this**, in the iOS or Android app. It works the same as on desktop. For a bold display name, copy a bold style from this page instead.
Does bold text count as more characters?
No. Each Unicode bold letter counts as one character, so a bold name is the same length as the plain version. Frames and symbols add their own characters.
