What is a Discord server tag?

A server tag is a 1–4 character label with a small badge that members can display next to their display name across Discord: in every server, in DMs and on their profile. It works like a clan tag that Discord shows for you, so people can see which community someone belongs to and click it to find the server.

Each person can show one tag at a time, and showing it is always the member’s choice. Tags don’t have to be unique, so two servers can both use GG.

Server tag rules

RuleDetails
Length1 to 4 characters.
CharactersLetters, numbers and certain special characters. Spaces and emoji are not allowed, and Discord doesn’t publish the full list of accepted symbols.
Fancy fontsUnicode font letters like 𝐆𝐆 or 亗 aren’t on the documented list, so expect them to be rejected. Put fancy letters in your display name instead.
Badge and colorEach tag has one badge from Discord’s badge packs and a color chosen by the server’s admins. Members can’t change either.
CostThe Server Tag perk needs 3 Server Boosts that stay applied. It is a separate perk, not a Boost level. If the server drops below 3 Boosts, tags disappear from profiles.
ModerationTags follow Discord’s Community Guidelines, and servers can use AutoMod to block words in member names.

How to set up a server tag (admins)

  1. Make sure the server has 3 Boosts for the perk. Open the Server Boosts tab, hover over Server Tag and press Enable Perk. Only the owner and admins can do this, and only on desktop or web.
  2. Click the server name in the top-left corner, open Server Settings and choose Server Tag.
  3. Type a tag of up to 4 characters, pick a badge and a color, and save.
  4. Announce it. Members who already wear the tag need to apply it again after you change it.

Pick something people can read at a glance: the tag shows in small type next to names, so short initials or a familiar word work better than random letters.

How to show a server tag next to your name

On desktop or web

  1. Click the cogwheel next to your username to open User Settings.
  2. Open Profiles and scroll to Server Tag.
  3. Press Select and pick the server whose tag you want to show.

On iPhone or Android

  1. Tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap Edit Profile and scroll to Server Tags.
  3. Choose the tag to apply.

The tag then shows next to your name everywhere: in chat, member lists and your DM list. You can only show one, and Discord rate-limits how often you can switch.

Server tags vs old-school clan tags

Before server tags, communities put a clan tag in each member’s nickname, like 【NOG】Alex or 亗 Alex. Those still work, and they allow any symbol or font, but they only show inside your server and use up nickname characters. Many servers now use both: an official server tag for everywhere, and a styled nickname for inside the server. Find brackets and clan symbols in the symbols collection and styled names on the name fonts page.

Discord Server Tag Ideas & Guide: common questions

How many characters can a Discord server tag have?

Up to 4. A tag needs at least 1 character, and spaces and emoji aren’t allowed.

How do I get a server tag on Discord?

As a member, open User Settings → Profiles → Server Tag on desktop, or Edit Profile → Server Tags on mobile, and pick a server. As a server admin, you need 3 Server Boosts on the Server Tag perk, then set the tag in Server Settings.

Can I use fancy fonts or symbols in a server tag?

Plain letters and numbers always work and some basic symbols are accepted, but Discord doesn’t list which. Unicode font letters and emoji are not supported, so use the badge for decoration instead.

Can I show more than one server tag?

No. You can show one server tag at a time, and you can switch to another server’s tag whenever you like, subject to a rate limit.

Do server tags have to be unique?

No. Different servers can use the same tag. The badge, color and server link are what tell them apart.

Why did my server tag disappear?

Either the server dropped below the 3 Boosts the perk needs, or an admin changed the tag. After a change, members have to apply the new tag again.
