What are kaomoji?
Kaomoji (顔文字, “face characters”) are faces built from punctuation, Japanese characters and symbols from other scripts, like (◕‿◕) or ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ. Unlike emoji they are plain text: they work anywhere Discord accepts text, they don’t need Nitro, and they look the same on every device that has the characters.
Western emoticons like :) are read sideways. Kaomoji are read upright, and the eyes do most of the work: ^ ^ is happy, T T is crying and ಠ ಠ is a disapproving stare.
Kaomoji that break in Discord, and how to fix them
Some kaomoji contain characters that Discord reads as formatting. The copy buttons on this page give you the plain text, so a few need a small fix when you paste them into a message:
| Problem | Example | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The shrug loses an arm | ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ shows as ¯_(ツ)_/¯ | Type two backslashes: ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯, or use Discord’s built-in /shrug command. |
| Text turns italic | Two kaomoji with * or _ on one line | Put a backslash before each * or _, or wrap the kaomoji in backticks. |
| Part of it disappears | Kaomoji with ~~ or || | Escape them with a backslash. |
Names, bios and statuses are less fussy: display names don’t use markdown at all, so kaomoji paste in exactly as shown.
Using kaomoji in names, bios and statuses
- Display names (32 characters): short faces like
ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ(5 characters) fit next to a name. Long action kaomoji can use half the limit. - About Me (190 characters): a kaomoji at the end of a line gives a bio personality. Pair one with a bio template.
- Custom status (128 characters): mood kaomoji like
(-_-) zzZwork well as away messages. - Server channels: admins can use them in channel and category names. Discord keeps the symbols but turns spaces into dashes in text channels.
Every kaomoji counts towards the limit by its number of characters, including invisible combining marks in faces like (ง'̀-'́)ง. Paste into the font generator to see the exact count.
Why some kaomoji show as boxes
Kaomoji borrow letters from scripts like Kannada (ಠ), Thai (ฅ) and Canadian Aboriginal syllabics (ᐠ ᐟ). If a device has no font for one of them it shows an empty box (□). Recent versions of Windows, macOS, iOS and Android cover almost all of them, but older phones and some Linux setups don’t. If a friend sees boxes, pick a face made only from punctuation and Japanese characters.
Discord Kaomoji: common questions
How do I type a kaomoji on Discord?
Click any kaomoji on this page to copy it, then paste it into Discord with Ctrl+V, Cmd+V or long-press and Paste on mobile. Discord also has /shrug, /tableflip and /unflip commands that add the classic faces for you.
Why does the shrug kaomoji lose its arm on Discord?
The backslash in ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is Discord’s escape character, so it disappears. Type two backslashes (¯\\_(ツ)_/¯) or use the /shrug command.
Can I use kaomoji in my Discord name?
Yes. Kaomoji are plain Unicode text, so they work in display names, server nicknames, bios and statuses. Keep an eye on the 32-character name limit, because long kaomoji can use half of it.
What is the difference between kaomoji and emoji?
Emoji are single pictures that each platform draws in its own style. Kaomoji are faces made from several ordinary text characters, so they are read as text, can be edited and work where emoji or custom emoji are not allowed.
What does ಠ_ಠ mean?
It is the “look of disapproval”, built from two Kannada letters as eyes. People use it for a blank, unimpressed stare.
