Small text in messages: the -# command
Start a line with a hyphen, a hash and a space, then your text:
-# this is small grey subtext
- It must be at the very start of a line and needs the space after
-#. - It applies to the whole line, so you can’t make one word small mid-sentence.
- It works in messages on desktop, web and mobile. Names and statuses don’t support it, so use the Unicode styles above there.
Which small text should I use?

Why some letters don’t get smaller
Unicode has no complete set of tiny letters, so these styles borrow characters from the phonetic alphabet.
- Superscript covers almost every letter.
- Subscript only exists for some letters (a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x). Here, b and y use Greek lookalikes, and c, d, f, g, q, w and z stay full size.
- Small caps has no reliable form for x and s, so they stay as normal lowercase, and q and f use lookalikes.
Screen readers may read these characters oddly, so keep tiny text short.

How do you make small text on Discord?
In a message, start the line with -# and a space. For names, bios and statuses, copy a small caps or superscript style from this page, because the -# command only works in messages.
Why is -# not working?
It must be at the very start of a line and followed by a space. It doesn’t work in the middle of a sentence, inside code blocks, or in names and statuses.
Can I make only one word small?
Not with -#, which shrinks the whole line. Use a superscript or small caps style for a single word instead.
Does small text work on Discord mobile?
Yes. Both -# subtext and the Unicode tiny letters display in the iOS and Android apps.
