Discord Timestamp Generator

Pick a date, time and time zone, then copy a timestamp into any Discord message. Discord shows it in each reader’s own time zone and language, so nobody has to convert times.

How to use a Discord timestamp

  1. Set the date and time above. The time zone starts as yours; change it if the event was announced in another zone, for example a 20:00 UK start.
  2. Pick a style from the table. Relative (:R) gives a live countdown, Date and time (:f) is the standard choice for events.
  3. Press Copy and paste the code into a Discord message. It looks like <t:1791889200:R> while you type and turns into a date as soon as you send it.

Timestamps work in messages, replies, threads and forum posts on desktop, web and mobile, and in embeds that bots post. Hovering over a timestamp on desktop shows the full date and time.

All 9 Discord timestamp formats

These examples use 1618953630, the same value as Discord’s documentation (20 April 2021, 21:20:30 UTC), shown the way a US English reader in Central time sees it. Your readers see their own time zone, language and clock style.

StyleCodeExample
Short time<t:1618953630:t>4:20 PM
Long time (Discord calls it medium time)<t:1618953630:T>4:20:30 PM
Short date<t:1618953630:d>04/20/2021
Long date<t:1618953630:D>April 20, 2021
Date and time (default)<t:1618953630:f> or <t:1618953630>April 20, 2021 at 4:20 PM
Full date and time<t:1618953630:F>Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 4:20 PM
Short date and time<t:1618953630:s>04/20/2021, 4:20 PM
Short date and long time<t:1618953630:S>04/20/2021, 4:20:30 PM
Relative<t:1618953630:R>5 years ago

New styles: :s and :S are recent additions to Discord’s documentation, so many older generators and bots list only seven formats.

Writing a timestamp by hand

The format is <t:UNIX:STYLE>:

  • UNIX is the number of seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC. Use seconds, not milliseconds: a 13-digit number from JavaScript’s Date.now() needs the last three digits removed.
  • STYLE is one letter from the table above. Leave it out (<t:1618953630>) to get the default date and time.
  • No spaces inside the brackets, and lowercase t at the start.

Bot developers can build the same string in code, for example `<t:${Math.floor(date / 1000)}:R>` in JavaScript, or use the timestamp helpers in libraries like discord.js and discord.py.

Countdowns and event announcements

The relative style updates live: it reads “in 3 hours”, then “in 5 minutes”, then “2 minutes ago” once the time passes, without anyone editing the message. Two patterns work well:

  • Event post: Tournament starts <t:1791889200:F> (<t:1791889200:R>) gives the exact date and a countdown.
  • Daily reminder: Raid at <t:1791889200:t> shows only the time, in each player’s zone.

For recurring events, Discord’s own Events feature (in the server menu) adds RSVPs and reminders. Timestamps are better for quick messages, rules channels and pinned schedules.

Timestamp not working?

  • It shows as plain text: check there are no spaces and that it isn’t inside backticks or a code block, which stop all formatting.
  • The time is wrong by a few hours: the time zone was wrong when the code was made. Pick the zone the time was meant in, then copy again.
  • It shows a date in 55,000 AD: the number is in milliseconds. Remove the last three digits.
  • 12-hour vs 24-hour clock: each reader sees their own setting, which comes from their Discord language and device settings. You can’t force one.
  • Names and statuses: timestamps are made for messages and embeds. Display names and custom statuses show the raw code instead.

Discord Timestamp Generator: common questions

How do I make a timestamp in Discord?

Pick a date and time in the generator on this page, press Copy next to the style you want, and paste the code (like <t:1791889200:f>) into a Discord message. It turns into a date when you send it.

How do I make a countdown in Discord?

Use the relative style, :R. A code like <t:1791889200:R> shows “in 2 hours” and keeps counting down live for everyone, then switches to “5 minutes ago” after the time passes.

Do Discord timestamps show in everyone’s time zone?

Yes. A timestamp stores one moment in time and each person’s Discord shows it in their own time zone and language, so a 20:00 UK start appears as 3:00 PM for someone in New York.

What do the letters in a Discord timestamp mean?

They pick the style: t short time, T long time, d short date, D long date, f date and time, F full date and time with weekday, s and S short date with time, and R relative (“in 3 days”).

Why is my Discord timestamp not working?

The usual causes are spaces inside the code, putting it in a code block, or using milliseconds instead of seconds. Timestamps are made for messages and embeds, so they don’t work in display names or custom statuses.

What is a Unix timestamp?

A count of seconds since 00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. It is the same number everywhere in the world, which is why Discord can show it in each reader’s local time. The generator shows the Unix value for your chosen time.
