How to type colored text in Discord

  1. Type or paste your message into the editor above, or start from an example.
  2. Select a word or line and pick a text color, background or style. Do this as many times as you like.
  3. Press Copy for Discord.
  4. Paste into any Discord channel or DM and send. The colors appear as soon as the message is posted.

Writing it by hand

Colored text is a code block whose first line is ansi. Inside it, an escape code switches the color on, and [0m switches it off. A red word, followed by plain text, looks like this, where ␛ stands for the invisible escape character (U+001B):

```ansi ␛[31mThis is red␛[0m and this is normal ␛[1;32mBold green␛[0m ```
Most keyboards can’t type the escape character, which is why generators like this one exist. You can combine codes with semicolons: 1;34 is bold blue and 4;33;40 is underlined yellow on black.
Discord ANSI color codes (2026 palette)
Discord supports eight colors. Codes 30–37 color the text and codes 40–47 color the background, with the same eight hues. Each Discord theme draws them slightly differently:
Changed in 2026: before August 2026, the background codes used a separate Solarized palette (dark navy, orange, marble blue and so on), and many guides still list those names. Codes like 38;5;n (256 colors), blinking and inverse are ignored by Discord.
Discord doesn’t publish documentation for ANSI code blocks. The palette and code support on this page are based on community testing, mainly the long-running colored text research by rebane2001, which tracked the August and October 2026 changes. If something looks different in your app, update Discord first.
Does Discord colored text work on mobile?
Colors render reliably in the Discord desktop app on Windows, Mac and Linux, and in the browser at discord.com. The iPhone and Android apps have historically shown ANSI blocks as plain text, and support has changed between app versions, so some phone users may see your message without colors. The newest codes (italic, strikethrough and custom colors) are the least likely to show on phones. For anything important, such as rules or announcements, make sure the message still reads well without the colors.
You can still create colored text on a phone: open this page in your mobile browser, build the message and copy it. Paste it straight into Discord. Editing the escape codes by hand on a phone keyboard often removes the invisible escape character.
Colored text not working? Check these
  • You see [31m or similar in the message: the escape character was lost. Copy the block from this page again instead of typing or editing it.
  • Everything is gray: the first line of the code block must be exactly ansi, right after the three backticks.
  • Colors show for you but not for a friend: they are probably on the mobile app, or an older desktop version for the new styles.
  • The message won’t send: messages are limited to 2,000 characters (4,000 with Nitro), and every escape code counts. The counter above includes them.
  • It worked in a code block but not inline: colors only work in a full ```ansi block, not in single-backtick inline code.
Other ways to add color on Discord
The diff code block trick
Before ANSI support, people used the diff code block: lines starting with + are shown in green and lines starting with - in red.
```diff + This line is green - This line is red ```

Colored names

Your name’s color in a server comes from your highest colored role, which admins set under Server Settings → Roles with any hex color. Nitro members can also add colors, gradients and fonts to their display name with Discord’s Display Name Styles. Code blocks can’t color names or bios.

Styled letters instead of colors

For names, bios and statuses, where code blocks don’t work, use Unicode font styles such as cursive or gothic, and see the Discord text formatting guide for bold, headers, spoilers and more.

Discord colored text FAQ

How do you type colored text on Discord?

Type your message in the editor above, select words and pick colors, then press Copy for Discord and paste the result into any server or DM. Behind the scenes it is a code block that starts with ```ansi and uses escape codes such as ESC[31m for red.

How do I make red text in Discord?

Select your text in the editor and choose Red. The copied code block uses the code 31 for red text, or 41 for a red background. You can also choose Pink, Yellow, Green, Blue, Cyan, White or Black.

Does Discord colored text work on mobile?

Colors render reliably in the Discord desktop app and in the browser. The iOS and Android apps have not always shown ANSI colors, so some phone users may see plain text inside a code block. If your readers are mostly on mobile, check on a phone before relying on colors.

Can I use any hex color in Discord?

Since October 2026 Discord has been rolling out 24-bit colors (codes 38;2 and 48;2) on desktop, so the custom color picker above can produce any hex color. People on older app versions see those parts in the default color, so the 8 classic colors are the safest choice.

Why are my Discord colors different from before?

Discord changed its ANSI palette in August 2026. Background codes 40–47 now use the same eight hues as the text codes 30–37, and every color is adjusted for the Light, Ash, Dark and Onyx themes. Older guides still list the previous Solarized background colors.

Why does my message show [31m instead of colors?

The invisible escape character before each code is missing, or the code block doesn’t start with ansi on the first line. The escape character can’t be typed on most keyboards and some phone keyboards remove it, so copy the block from this page rather than retyping it.

How do I make rainbow text on Discord?

Type your text, then press Rainbow. Each letter gets the next color in the sequence red, yellow, green, cyan, blue and pink, and you can copy it straight into Discord.

Can I color my Discord name or bio?

No. ANSI colors only work inside code blocks in messages. Name colors come from your server roles, and Nitro members can add colors and effects with Discord’s Display Name Styles.
